ACANA is a range of different dog and cat foods, rather than one formula with a universal ingredient list. We use Adult Dog Recipe from the manufacturer's European catalogue as a specific example. The first declared ingredients of Adult Dog Recipe are fresh chicken (13%), dried chicken (13%), whole red lentils, whole green peas, whole chickpeas, fresh chicken giblets including liver and heart (6.5%), and dried turkey (6.5%). This sequence tells you more than a general brand slogan: there are two forms of chicken, three pulses and another bird. Chicken fat, eggs, hake, fish oil, herring and vegetables appear farther down. A dog with a confirmed reaction to chicken cannot treat this as a safe exclusion recipe.

ACANA Indoor Entrée for cats shows why you cannot describe every ACANA recipe using the same ingredient list. According to the manufacturer's page, this cat recipe starts with fresh chicken (18%), dried chicken (16%) and dried herring (15%), followed by oats and peas. Unlike the Adult Dog example, this cat recipe does include oats. Neither the word ACANA nor “Indoor” gives a reliable ingredient list without the exact product label. Food intended for cats should not be assumed interchangeable with a product formulated for dogs.

Before comparing the two, write down your pet's species, age, body condition, current food, confirmed intolerances and cost per day rather than only the price per bag. Photograph both the ingredient list and the full nutritional analysis on the actual package. For regular deliveries, confirm the exact recipe and bag size and ask about availability before travelling.
